I did some preliminary reading (ncbi pmc articles) on my topic (neural mechanisms of performance anxiety) mostly to get background information and possibly find a niche I could start with:

I looked for possible mentors in the department of neuroscience at UT Southwestern, since I could do lab research as part of my thesis, and submitted a mentor request form.
